What to buy in Moldova: wine and other souvenirs

Wine is the obvious souvenir from Moldova, whose wines sell in 71 countries according to the National Office for Vine and Wine; divin (Moldovan wine brandy), crafts and food gifts are the others on travellers’ lists. Here is what we would pack from our own cellar, what else to look for, and how much wine you can take into the EU or Great Britain duty-free.

Facts checked on

Gouache painting: wine bottles wrapped in paper, a bottle of red wine, a bottle of divin, a painted jug, an embroidered towel, honey and walnuts

Which Moldovan wines make good souvenirs?

  • A bottle with an artist’s label. Every vintage of our Artitude collection has a label created by a Moldovan artist; Artitude Merlot 2015, for example, is 349 MDL.
  • Moldova’s own white grape. Viorica is one of the varieties Moldova counts as its own. We make two dry whites from the 2023 vintage: Goliard Viorica (289 MDL) and Artitude Viorica (189 MDL). More in our Viorica guide.
  • A Kagor-style wine. Pastoral Red is a sweet red liqueur wine in the Kagor style, 16% vol (119 MDL).
  • Sparkling Fetească Neagră. KAVI is a brut rosé sparkling wine from Moldova’s own red grape, Fetească Neagră, PGI Codru, 2025 vintage (150 MDL).
  • Pomegranate wine. Pastoral Pomegranate is a fruit wine (119 MDL); see all our fruit wines.
  • Alcohol-free. LifWin wines are made for people who drive or do not drink: white, red and rosé; LifWin Merlot Rosé is 160 MDL.

Ready-made ideas by budget are on Moldovan wine gifts.

What else do people bring home from Moldova?

GPSmyCity’s list of 20 Moldovan products to take home (2015) includes, besides wine and divin, traditional pottery, carpets, handmade tablecloths, folk instruments, mărțișor, walnut jam, chocolate and balsam. Divin is Moldova’s wine brandy: according to the National Office for Vine and Wine, it is distilled twice from wine and aged for at least three years in oak, and its PGI covers the whole country. We do not make divin; we do make herbal balsams, Balsam de Galiția (229 MDL).

How much wine can you take home?
