The XXL project: bottling for the USA, 2024
What XXL is
XXL is an American brand of fruit-flavoured grape wines at 16% vol. The XXL labels with Moldova as origin, approved in the USA from 2021 to 2024, belong to the importer Tri-Vin Imports of New York.
The flavours on those labels are blackberry, pineapple, strawberry, mango, peach, apple, blueberry, cherry and guava.
According to the Baltimore Banner, the brand was created in Maryland by the distributor DMV Distributing, and Tri-Vin Imports owns it. The brand's site is drinkxxl.com.
What Doina Vin did in 2024
From February to December 2024 we bottled XXL wines for the USA in Răzeni, ordered by five exporters from the Republic of Moldova. Our bottling register shows three flavours: mango, peach and apple.
- Kazayak-Vin: 985,956 bottles, February-April 2024 (mango and peach).
- Suvorov Winery: 990,000 bottles, June-August 2024 (mango, peach and apple).
The XXL brand is not ours. Export and the relationship with the American importer stayed with the exporters.
Who is named on the labels
The XXL labels approved in the USA in 2021 and 2023 name Suvorov-Vin or Kazayak-Vin as the bottler. The labels approved in 2024 name no bottler.
Suvorov Winery SRL, our client in summer 2024, is a company separate from Suvorov-Vin SRL. The Ștefan Vodă PGI producers' association presents them on different pages: Suvorov Winery and Suvorov-Vin, the group that Kazayak-Vin also belongs to.
Moldova and the USA in 2024
In 2024 the USA was the first export market for bottled wine from the Republic of Moldova, at USD 46.5 million (ONVV, quoted by Independent.md).
Exports of flavoured wines grew by 949% to 24.6 million bottles, almost all to the USA (ONVV, quoted by Wine and Spirits).
Logos Press wrote on 9 April 2025 that the main contribution came from Kazayak-Vin, which produces wine under private label for XXL (the Logos Press article).
After 2024
In April 2025 the USA introduced a 31% duty on goods from the Republic of Moldova. According to Logos Press, XXL then suspended work with the Moldovan producer.
