National Wine Day
National Wine Day in Moldova: the 2027 date and a winery visit
Moldova celebrates National Wine Day every year on the first weekend of October; in 2027 that is 2 and 3 October. Here is where the festival comes from, what happened at its 25th edition in 2026 and how to spend it at a winery near Chișinău.
What National Wine Day is
National Wine Day was established by the Parliament of Moldova in 2002 and was first held on the second Sunday of October. In 2012 Parliament moved it to the first Saturday and Sunday of October. The first edition took place at Moldexpo and brought together more than 50 wine producers.
The festival has grown with the industry: wine accounts for about 3% of Moldova’s GDP and nearly 8% of its exports, and the country has more than 100 wineries. It is organised by the National Office for Vine and Wine under the Wine of Moldova brand.
When it is in 2027
Under the 2012 rule the festival falls on the first Saturday and Sunday of October, which in 2027 means 2 and 3 October. The timeanddate.com calendar gives the same day, Saturday 2 October 2027.
The 25th edition in 2026
The anniversary edition took place on 3 and 4 October 2026 in the Great National Assembly Square in Chișinău; the organisers announced more than 110 wineries, tastings and a Wine School. On the same days the celebrations continued at wineries across the country.
A few milestones from earlier years:
- 2019: the festival spread from the Great National Assembly Square to Cathedral Square and Eugen Doga pedestrian street, with more than 70,000 visitors;
- 2020: it moved online, to wine shops and to wineries;
- 2022: more than 120,000 visitors and wines from 86 producers;
- 2023: the programme expanded to wineries, which welcomed nearly 20,000 visitors, while 94 producers took part in the square;
- 2024: more than 150,000 visitors, who tasted more than 50,000 glasses with the Tasting Passport;
- 2025: a record 106 wineries in the Great National Assembly Square, 43 of them small producers.
The Tasting Passport was introduced in 2017 for a more orderly tasting and moderate drinking.
